My blog is by an OBBW (older beautiful black woman), me. But the blog is not for black women only. When you look at the media, we do see Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric and other white women over 50. But, I would say the average, non-celebrity white woman is feeling some of the same things I am about non-representation of the over 45 crowd.
If we are represented, it is usually as an aging, arthritic, wheel-chair bound, stylish, stand- offish, depressed matriarch. There seems to be a stigma surrounding “older women” and if we are ever shown with male partners, we look lonely or ignored at best. I don’t know about you, but this portrayal doesn’t grab me at all.
I’d like to bring all women over 45 together to start a conversation about what I believe is media manipulation and a subtle ignoring of baby boomer women. It is estimated that there are 77,000,000 baby boomers in the United States, with more than half being women. Millionaire Internet Marketer, Ann Sieg recently did a video that called post 50 year old women “Prime Time” and the “Ultimate Power Consumer.” While other groups are experiencing diminishing income, many women over 50 have more discretionary income than ever before. Seems to me that this is a group that should be listened and marketed to.
QUESTION TO ALL WOMEN OVER 45: Does modern media make you feel honored, disrespected, ignored or does the media have no impact on you?
